August 28, 2020 Update

Update from Dean Lively

Dear Students,

Now that we're just two weeks from arrivals and the beginning of the fall term, thank you for pivoting to move ahead. I want to thank of all of you who signed and submitted your community expectations agreement by the deadline. And I also want to acknowledge that some of you have concerns associated with the pre-assigned arrival times, travel logistics, and other preparations for fall.

As you might imagine, we've been getting a lot of questions and a lot of requests for exceptions. I'm afraid, however, that the re-opening plan is the plan. And we must all work together - even at personal inconvenience - in order to make this work. In many ways, the way we're able to approach the re-opening is indicative of what's to come for the remainder of the term. There are rules and deadlines that must be followed and met now, just as their will be new restrictions that must be followed from now until the end of the term. Flexibility that might have been workable in previous years is no longer possible.

In that same spirit, I have a few updates for you going into the weekend.

If you haven't seen it yet, please keep an eye on our new arrival page at https://student-affairs.dartmouth.edu/resources/2020-2021-planning-information/fall-term-2020-pre-arrival-information.

We will use my messages and updates on the website to keep you all posted about fall term developments - whether you are enrolling on campus or remotely. We want you all to have the same access to information at the same time.

ARRIVALS

We know that this is challenging and the time is short, but it is necessary, and we think you are up to the task. As I said in my message yesterday: "Your assigned arrival date and time are exactly that - assigned. We must manage the number arriving by both date and time to ensure that we are able to conduct arrival testing at the Dick's House tent as effectively, efficiently and safely as possible. No early arrivals on campus will be permitted. You must arrange your travel plans so that you arrive as assigned and expected."

Please make your travel arrangements accordingly. For students receiving financial aid and living away from Hanover, there is a travel allowance in your Cost of Attendance to help cover these expenses.

DINING SERVICES

Those of you who are living on-campus and in Greek facilities for fall will receive meals from Dartmouth Dining during the 14-day arrival quarantine period. Early next week, you will receive a survey from dartmouth.dining@dartmouth.edu that will collect your menu preferences and alert Dining of any allergies.  With that information, their chefs will prepare meals for you to pick up. Meals will be delivered to your on-campus residence prior to you receiving your initial on-campus test results. Meals will be available for pickup from various service locations for the remainder of your 14-day quarantine period.

PRE-ARRIVAL TESTING AND HEALTH MONITORING

Domestic students approved for on-campus enrollment this fall have now received pre-arrival testing information from Dr. Reed. For troubleshooting assistance, please send a note to covid@vaulthealth.com.

You should all be deliberately monitoring your temperature and health symptoms daily now. Please call the Health Service at 603-646-9400 if you have health-related questions or concerns.

PREPARING FOR REMOTE LEARNING

New students will be introduced to the Dartmouth IT environment during Orientation. Over the next week, continuing students who need help with internet access issues, a computer or device, installing or using Dartmouth software, accessing a Dartmouth system (such as DartHub or Kronos), or assistance with Duo authentication issues, should contact the ITC TECH Center at https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/1806/Portal/Requests/ServiceDet?ID=42638 to ask for help. And for self-help information about technology services offered at Dartmouth, such as Zoom, Slack, Canvas and more, search our Knowledge Base in the Dartmouth Services portal at https://services.dartmouth.edu/TDClient/1806/Portal/Home/

We will send additional updates next week. To those of you going into summer term exams, good luck. If you need assistance over the weekend, please call Safety and Security at 646-4000 to ask to speak to the dean on call.

All best, and have a wonderful weekend.
