September 18, 2020 Update

Weekend Update from Dean Lively

Dear Students,

Congratulations on getting through this first week. I want to thank all of you who are doing your absolute best to follow the spirit of the health guidelines. We know that this has been stressful and that many of you are beginning to feel the length of the 14-day quarantine.

Now is not the time to let up.

As we go into the weekend, we've been receiving a lot of questions about expectations. We are in the final stage of the arrival quarantine period, and the framework hasn't changed. Please continue all your good work so far to reduce the risk of transmission and exposure, and to increase the likelihood that we get through the term successfully.

As a reminder:

*You are expected to remain alone in your rooms as much as possible during the quarantine period. You may not gather in the residence halls or anywhere else, and you may not go downtown, run errands, enter college buildings other than your own residence hall, or enter or use any facilities in town. Please limit your movements to the Green side of Wheelock Street and the interior of the campus.

*You may go outside for exercise or take short solo walks on campus, and you may register for and participate in structured activities at https://students.dartmouth.edu/collis/events/weeks-welcome.

*You must wear your face coverings unless you are alone in your room, and you must maintain 6' physical distancing (in all directions) at all times.

*Take your temperature and complete the TSA at the start of every day. You should be contacting the Health Service at 646-9440 if you experience symptoms or have any concern about your physical or mental health. Consultations with the Health Service are confidential. The dean on call is also available after hours - just call Safety and Security at 646-4000, and they will put the dean on call in touch with you.

What's to come:

Over the course of the next week, each of you will be released as your quarantine period ends. When that happens, you must still wear your face coverings, maintain 6' physical distancing, complete the TSA daily screening, and contact the Health Service if you become ill or believe you may have been exposed.

Campus facilities will open gradually on a limited basis after September 25th. Only students approved for on-campus enrollment will be eligible for the limited access that will be available. You'll receive more information about that later this week.

As the D wrote this morning, "....the path forward is clear: Respect your peers and abide by public health guidelines. It isn't hard. Every member of the community is relying on us, and every one of us has an obligation to do our part."

These expectations hold for all constituencies - students, faculty, staff, and greater community members. Please hold on, and please recommit to putting the health and safety of the community ahead of individual preference. We will only get through this together.  Thank you for all so many of you have done so far, and thank you all for your help in the days and weeks to come.

All my best,

Dean Lively
