July 14, 2020: Message to International Students from Dean Lively

Message to International Students from Dean Lively

Dear International Students,

I'm thrilled to be writing this evening to join you in celebrating the government's decision to rescind the federal guidance issued last week. The College has just released the statement below. While I know that many challenges remain, this reversal certainly brings some relief to the entire higher education community, and I hope, to you. We know how hard this last week has been.

I will be in touch again soon.

All my best,

Dean Lively

Statement on Reversal of Fall 2020 Federal Operational Guidance for International Students

We are elated that the government has rightly decided today to rescind last week's guidance and FAQs.  In the amicus brief we filed together with our Ivy-plus peers on Sunday, July 12, in support of the federal lawsuit filed by Harvard and MIT, we challenged that directive as arbitrary and capricious in forcing schools to choose between opening campuses regardless of public health risks or compelling their international students to leave the country, and in requiring international students to choose between complying with the rule and continuing their education.  Now that the government is returning to its March guidance allowing international students to count online classes toward a full course of study beyond the ordinarily applicable limits, we remain committed to identifying possible solutions for fall term instruction and housing and providing resources to our international students.
