The College has announced the members of the three linked working groups that are pursuing the development of a plan for robust and sustained diversity and inclusion across the Dartmouth campus.

“Our engagement with the full human diversity of backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences is critical—to both the strength of the Dartmouth community and the effectiveness of Dartmouth’s learning and leadership,” said President Phil Hanlon ’77 and Provost Carolyn Dever in announcing the initiative last month.

Each of the three working groups is made up of students, faculty, and staff. Their work includes defining clear metrics for success and accountability, as well as identifying the most promising strategies—and phasing out ineffective ones—to ensure that Dartmouth’s plan is best in class and creates the standard for higher education.

In May, the working groups will present recommendations to the executive committee, which includes Executive Vice President Rick Mills, Vice President for Institutional Equity and Diversity Evelynn Ellis, President Hanlon, and Provost Dever.

Each of the working groups has met at least once, and they will continue to meet regularly through the spring term. The chairs of the groups met this week with the members of the executive committee to brief them on the groups’ progress to date.

Dartmouth Launches Initiative for Inclusive Excellence

Report on Faculty Diversity Is Released

Based on input from the working groups, the executive committee will publish a comprehensive plan for diversity and inclusivity at Dartmouth by the end of spring term, and share its proposals with the board of trustees.

Twelve to 15 students, staff, and faculty members serve on each committee, said Dean of the College Rebecca Biron, who chairs the student working group with Vice Provost for Student Affairs Inge-Lise Ameer. While the working groups are being kept this size in order to be able to produce concrete recommendations in a timely fashion, everyone who expressed interest will be invited to give feedback in special meetings in the spring, Biron said.

Members of the Dartmouth community can offer comments or ask questions of the working groups via these email addresses:

Additional information about the initiative can be found at Dartmouth.edu/diversity.  Comments, which can be anonymous, can also be submitted through the website.
