Statement on Executive Order 13769 (Refugee/Muslim Ban)

The following message was sent on Saturday, Jan. 28, by Dartmouth’s director of the Office of Visa and Immigration Services to Dartmouth students and scholars who might be affected by the executive order issued by President Trump on limiting immigration from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen.

I am writing to follow up with you on the message our office sent you earlier this week. Yesterday the White House issued the executive order related to immigration from specific countries. In the executive order is a provision suspending immigrant and nonimmigrant entry to the U.S. for individuals from Iran, Iraq, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen. While it is too early to know how the order will be implemented, it is our understanding that it applies to individuals with a temporary visa status in the U.S. (F-1, J-1, H-1B, etc.), permanent residence in the U.S., and to individuals with dual citizenship (citizenship in a listed country and another, third country). The order calls for a 90-day suspension, but that time period could be extended.

We strongly recommend that foreign nationals from the seven countries listed above avoid all international travel, including to Canada.

I understand the anxiety that this is causing, and that we are all feeling. Our office will continue to monitor this situation, and communicate updates to you.
