Dartmouth Offering 'Tour Tuesdays' for Community Members

Ever wanted to explore the Dartmouth steam tunnels? Been curious about how paleoanthropologists study ancient fossils or how augmented and virtual reality work? Wanted to see the treasures in Dartmouth Libraries Rauner Special Collections Library? 

Beginning July 2, members of the Upper Valley community are invited to campus to participate in Tour Tuesdays—a series of visits to some of Dartmouth’s historic buildings, research labs, libraries, and outdoor spaces throughout July and August.

“We’re thrilled to be able to welcome local community members to learn more about the Dartmouth campus, including the amazing research that goes on here and some of the facilities, resources, and activities that are open to everyone,” says Heather Drinan, director of state government relations and community outreach. 

The events—which in addition to visits to the paleoanthropology lab, the steam tunnels, and Rauner, include tours of the food offerings at the Class of 1953 Commons (lunch included), a guided visit to the historic Old Dartmouth Cemetery and Webster Cottage, and much more—are free and open to the public, including Upper Valley community members, staff, faculty, students, and other visitors. (Children must be accompanied by an adult.)

Registration is required, and waitlists will be available if the tours fill up. The schedule includes:

July 2: Class of 1953 Commons tour and lunch, 11:30 a.m.; Paleoanthropology lab with Professor of Anthropology Jeremy DeSilva, 1 p.m 

July 9: Class of 1953 Commons tour and lunch, 11:30 a.m.; Webster Cottage tours, 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 4 p.m.

July 16: Sacred Spaces tour with Chaplain and Tucker Center for Spiritual and Ethical Living Director Rev. Nancy Vogele ’85, 12:15 p.m.; Data Experiences and Visualizations Studio tour, 2 p.m.

July 23: Genomics lab discussion and tour with Assistant Director Elizabeth Sergison and Co-Director Shannon Soucy, 11:15 a.m.; Class of 1953 Commons tour and lunch, 11:30 a.m.; Webster Cottage tours, 2:30 p.m., 3 p.m., and 3:30 p.m.

July 30: Dartmouth Cemetery tour, 5 p.m.

Aug. 6: Class of 1953 Commons tour and lunch, 11:30 a.m.; Heating Plant and Steam Tunnel tour, 2 p.m.

Aug. 13: Class of 1953 Commons tour and lunch, 11:30 a.m.; Dartmouth Cemetery tour, 5 p.m.

Aug. 20: Rauner Library tour, 12 p.m.; Human anatomy lab with lab director James Reed, 1 pm.

Aug. 27: Paleoanthropology lab with Professor of Anthropology Jeremy DeSilva, 1 p.m.

The up-to-date schedule and registration information are available on the Dartmouth Tour Tuesdays web page. More events may be added throughout the summer, and Drinan says she expects the series to continue in the fall.
